A Whale of a Time
There are surely few natural spectacles more stunning that watching the magnificent southern right whale in its natural habitat.
The seaside resort of Hermanus in South Africa is known as the whale-watching capital of the world and from July until December every year its waters are visited by this majestic species of whale.
Between 60 and 100 of the animals come from Antarctica to Hermanus' Walker Bay over this six-month period to calf and they have been known to swim within ten metres of the shore.
The right whale, so called because they are considered the right whale to hunt owing to their slow movement, can grow up to 18 metres in length and weigh up to 100 tonnes.
People staying in cheap hotels in South Africa who make the trip to Hermanus will be able to enjoy a fantastic view of the animals' behaviour from the town's cliff tops.
Hermanus has developed into a popular holiday destination thanks to whale watching, as well as its setting close to an awe-inspiring mountain range.
