Derby in Durbs

Derby in Durbs Those who like their horse racing with a little style might be fascinated to discover that the pageantry, style and extraordinary hats normally associated with Royal Ascot has its imitators elsewhere, not least at the Natal Turf club in Durban.

Held at Greyville Racecourse on July 7th, Durban July is a key feature of South Africa's racing (and social) calendar as some of the biggest money races in the country take place and everybody has a bet on a race day that dates back to 1897.

The programme published by the Natal Turf Club features 12 races followed by a fireworks display.

In addition to the racing, Durban has plenty of attractions for visitors.

Although it is the winter months in the southern hemisphere, the sub-tropical location of the city means it is still warm, so the golden beaches and excellent surfing will still be welcoming, while those looking for somewhere to eat out or be entertained can do so either on the beachfront or in Morningside, a suburb just to the north of Greyville.

Durban has plenty of accommodation for visitors, including cheap hotels.
