Encounter Johannesburg

Encounter Johannesburg Visitors to South Africa in July can have quite an encounter in the country's largest city when the Encounters documentary film festival takes place in July.

The event sees up-and-coming film makers from South Africa showing off their talents with a series of screenings, between July 13th and 22nd.

Last year saw no less than 65 films shown, with 20 from South Africa, according the organiser's website, shown in the Nu Cinemas in Hyde Park.

As well as the films, there is a wealth of things for those staying in cheap hotels to do in and around Johannesburg.

Visitors to the centre can enjoy a spectacular view over downtown with its tall buildings and the city beyond from the Roof of Africa, a viewing platform in the Carlton Tower, while the adventurous can take a guided tour round the famous township of Soweto, which includes the only street in the world to have had two Nobel Peace Prize winners live on it (Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu).

Those who fancy heading underground can explore a reconstruction of one of the gold mines the city was founded on at Gold Reef City, just one of many great historical sights to see.
