Make the Splash

Make the splash Those who fancy re-living the Glastonbury experience in a far-off place can do so in South Africa at the Splashy Fen Music Festival between April 5th and 9th.

Despite the name, there's nothing like the flat fenlands there, the festival being situated on farmland in the foothills of the towering Drakensberg Range, home to the highest mountains in South Africa.

Set on the banks of the Umzinkulu river and attracting thousands, the festival is described by organisers as an example of how the country ought to operate, with social barriers broken down and local musicians given a big chance to showcase their talents, although there will be some overseas acts.

Because of the altitude and autumnal scheduling, the weather can be somewhat varied, so those taking their tents should come prepared, although Glastonbury veterans have probably seen it all anyway, except perhaps for snow.

Visitors may of course opt to stay in cheap hotels locally, an option also available in many locations around the Drakensberg for those who want to explore the mountains, discover the Zulu culture of Kwazulu-Natal or head down to sunny Durban for sun, sand and surf.
