Outrun the Gun
Visitors to Cape Town who feel a bit fit can try a bit of gun running - not the illegal sort, of course, but one of the city's favourite athletic events.
The Cape Gun Run, which takes place in September (date to be confirmed) will see thousands of runners set off from Beach Road on a half-marathon that takes in various sights of the city as it winds round the Victoria and Albert Waterfront, then around central Cape Town in an attempt to reach the finish before the noon cannon is fired from Signal Hill.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels can enjoy running in the event as well as a large number of other attractions in this beautiful and instantly recognisable location at the tip of Africa.
Those with plenty of energy left can climb Table Mountain, or take the cable car up if they feel tired, while any trip to Cape Town offers beaches, wildlife, wineries, museums dedicated to the turbulent history of the city and country, not least the former prison at Robben Island, which can be reached by boat.
