Permaparty

Permaparty Anyone interested in a slightly alternative way of celebrating the new year may find it in South Africa's Free State at the Rustler's Valley Mountain Retreat.

Set in a remote mountain area near the town of Ficksburg, the retreat offers a spectacular four-day party over the end of the old year and start of the new, while emphasising the Retreat's new-age concept of "permaculture", an ecologically friendly way of living.

Visitors can experience the "sweat huts", try their hand at African drumming and enjoy several bands as the party goes on and on.

A visit to the retreat can be made as part of a wider exploration of the state, which has plenty of accommodation options, including cheap hotels.

Attractions in the state include a wide range of mountain scenery, including the impressive Drakensberg range on the southern border with Kwazulu-Natal, while the state capital, Bloemfontein, is famous as the birthplace of J.R.R Tolkein.
