P-p-p Pick Up a Penguin
Many zoo visitors will enjoy watching the penguins as they waddle around and shoot like torpedoes through the water, but visitors to Simon's Town on the Cape Peninsula will be able to experience this close up as the black and white birds cluster around the aptly named Boulders Beach.
The Simon's Town Penguin Festival, held on September the 15th and 16th, celebrates the presence of the colony of African Penguins in the vicinity, which has existed since a change in fishing quotas in False Bay provided enough food for the penguins to move in.
Food, partying and activities for all the family are the core of this festival, which aims to "celebrate the rights of penguins", according to festival organisers.
Located at the southern end of Cape Town, Simon's Town is situated among some of the finest scenery in the world.
Table Mountain, the spectacular Chapman's Peak drive and the rich history and party spirit of the city are all close at hand.
Visitors interested in both history and penguins can also enjoy a visit to Robben Island, seeing both the prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years and the island's own penguin colony.
