Swim with the Sharks

Swim with the sharks Those who really fancy something to chew on can try a trip of a lifetime off the coast of South Africa anytime after March 1st, as the great white shark diving season begins.

Dive the Big 5 runs trips from Gansbaai in the Cape, some 180 km from Cape Town, towards Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa.

The dive itself takes place off Dyer island, host to a great seal colony, which happens to be one of Jaws' favourite snacks, hence the large number of great whites.

Run by experts, the experience involves being lowered by a shark-proof cage into an area which is loaded with bait to attract the sharks, allowing a close-up view with these kings of the deep without (literally) costing an arm and a leg.

Back on dry land, Gansbaai is located close to the Garden Route, which features a wide variety of plants and flowers from the Cape floral kingdom.

The Garden Route has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
