Few cities in the world offer a visual feast to match Cape Town, but it's the view on the silver screen that's on offer from November 14th to the 21st at the Cape Town world cinema festival.

The event, taking place simultaneously with the Sithengi film and television market, is a showcase of independent films from outside the big Holly/Bolly wood industries, with African and other third world productions to the fore.

Among the aims of the festival is to develop the film making and watching culture in Africa, particularly South Africa, with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SACB) describing their aim as "total citizen empowerment".

While the festival will appeal to film buffs, Cape Town has a huge range of activities for all visitors, as well as plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.

Visitors with an interest in the social and political history of South Africa can take a township tour or visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was kept as a political prisoner for 18 years, while the natural scenery, flora and fauna offers sunshine, famous beaches such as Camps Bay, penguins, the dramatic Boulders' Peak coastal drive, the cape peninsula and of course the famous Table Mountain, with cable car rides for those daunted by the climb.

There are also many famous wineries in the region for those who need a nice drink after having so much fun.
