Areas of Interest in Almeria
The area surrounding the fortress is full of history. There are plenty of churches to see, and the castle on top of the hill must be seen. The Cathedral is the central part of the old city with an architecture mix of Gothic and Renaissance.
Puerta de Purchena is the busy central square at the heart of the city. Exploring the narrow streets off the plaza, there are excellent tapas bars and interesting boutiques to be found. The buildings are in moorish style, and the church which was destroyed in the civil war is now a national monument.
Ceramics, textiles and basket making are practised crafts in this area. Carpentry and coral carvings are also popular with visitors. There are many small gift shops around the town where these items can be bought.
Each year in August time there is an excellent festival featuring some of the best dancers and guitarists in Spain. The event has run for nearly 40 years at Plaza de la Constitucion to celebrate the music.
Eating Out in Almeria
Cuisine from this region has a clear arabic influence with a strong tendency towards fish and seafood. Exploring the historical quarter, there are plenty of bars and wine cellars which offer good wine and tapas. There are also restauratns and bars around Las Ramblas and the beach area.
Gran Muralla can be found on Calle Sagunto. The menu has a wide range of dishes and are all affordable.
Restaurant Alfareros offers an excellent three course lunch and dinner menu which includes wine and a choice of meat or fish main courses.
Real is an impressive restaurant. The restored historical building gives it a great atmosphere. The menu offers a wide range of dishes, including a variety of meat and fish. The excellent food comes at a price at this exclusive restaurant.
Almeria Night Life
Bodeguilla Ramon is an inexpensive stop. With each drink there is a free tapa.
La Camba on Calle Reina Regente is a lively bar. On selected nights there is karaoke until late, and acid jazz is the usual music to hear here.
La Clasica is the place to visit for late night dancing. It plays a variety of music and has a friendly upbeat atmosphere.
From the Airport to Almeria
Taxi's run from the airport outside of the terminal building into the city centre. Buses run every half hour or every 45 minutes and take around half an hour into the city centre.
