An Elephantine Event
Those fascinated by history and in particular Roman history will be able to discover much more about one key period of it by visiting the Murcia region of Spain in early autumn.
It is here, in the city of Cartagena, that the Carthaginians v Romans festival takes place from September 22nd to October 1st.
Celebrating the famous conflict between the two sides, during which Hannibal made his famous crossing of the Alps on elephants to attack from the north, the event sees re-enactments of the events, accompanied by various entertainments.
The event should provide a great insight into the life and times of Hannibal and his Roman adversary Scipio for those staying in cheap hotels.
Meanwhile, modern day Murcia has plenty more entertainments in store for visitors.
Cartagena itself has walls and forts in keeping with its naval and maritime heritage, while the warm autumn weather and the beaches provide a break from the encroaching British autumn.
