Barcelona Enjoys Incident-free New Year's Eve

Barcelona enjoys incident-free New Year's Eve Almost everyone staying in cheap hotels in Barcelona for New Year's Eve had an enjoyable and incident-free evening, the city council has announced.

A total of 60,000 people saw in the new year in Barcelona, with most gathering at central meeting points such as Placa Catalunya, las Ramblas and Glories.

Proceedings went particularly smoothly this year, the council said, with only 34 of 60,000 people requiring medical assistance, compared to 137 last year.

People enjoying stays in Barcelona for the new year period will be able to take advantage of the festive spirit throughout the city in the coming days as various festivals and events are held.

One such occasion is the 60th International Kings Hockey Tournament, which will be held at the Reial Club de Polo.

Barcelona is a popular city at Christmas time among thousands of tourists across Europe and in 2007 an initiative was introduced to make visitors' holidays as easy as possible.

The BCN mobile phone service offered information on Barcelona via WAP, including details of events taking place around the city, locations of restaurants and other venues and useful phone numbers.
