Barcelona Exhibition Pays Tribute to John Cage
Travellers staying in cheap hotels in Barcelona over the coming months will be able to visit an exhibition paying tribute to the avant-garde musician and artist John Cage.
The display, which is titled The Anarchy of Silence: John Cage and Experimental Art, is billed as the most important retrospective dedicated to Cage since his death in 1992.
It was launched at Barcelona's Museum of Contemporary Art, also known as MACBA, on October 23rd and will run until January 10th 2010.
With works such as his four minutes and 33 seconds of silence and pieces dictated entirely by chance, Cage established himself as one of the leading figures of the post-war avant-garde.
The Barcelona exhibition features 200 items highlighting various aspects of his career and creativity, including sound recordings, scores, installations and paintings.
Commenting on the arrangement of the display, MACBA director Bartomeu Mari said: "The exhibition is like a large score, not as an indecipherable object but rather like instructions, because it suggests we perform, we have to interpret it."
