Barcelona Honours Timeless Directors

Barcelona honours timeless directors Culture vultures staying in hotels in Barcelona in the coming months will be able to join the city in paying homage to two of cinema's greatest directors.

The names of Ingmar Bergman and Jean-Luc Godard will be the dominant fixtures of the coming programme at the Filmoteca de Catalunya.

Bergman, a Swedish filmmaker known for his moody explorations of loss, identity and other issues of the human condition, died this year on the same day as another respected director, Michelangelo Antonioni.

Barcelona's Filmoteca will be screening some of his best-known films, including Wild Strawberries, which starred Bibi Andersson, a regular Bergman collaborator.

Jean-Luc Godard, a French filmmaker now in his late 70s, was an instrumental member of the French New Wave cinema movement of the late 1950s and 1960s.

Among the films by this director shown this year will be the History of Cinema series, a visual essay expressing Godard's personal theories on the cinematic medium.

Visitors can find the Filmoteca de Catalunya on Barcelona's Avinguda Sarria.
