Barcelona 'most Visited City in Spain'
The myriad attractions and attributes of Barcelona made it the most visited city in Spain last year, according to new figures.
Spain's tourism ministry compiled statistics for the Frontier Tourism Movement Survey and found that a total of 59.2 million people visited the Iberian country in 2007, one million more than the previous year.
The most popular region of all was Catalonia, the autonomous community in north-east Spain, which attracted 15.2 million tourists.
Barcelona is Catalonia's capital and its most popular tourist destination, boasting attractions such as the Sagrada Familia, which sees more than two million visitors every year.
The Sagrada Familia is characterised by the distinctive architectural style of Antoni Gaudi, one of the most important members of the Modernisme movement.
People staying in cheap hotels in Barcelona hoping to get a comprehensive look at Gaudi's work can visit Park Guell, Casa Vicens, Casa Calvet or Casa Batllo.
