Barcelona Voted Top European Holiday Hotspot
Barcelona is considered the definitive European holiday hotspot, according to the results of an extensive survey.
Global market research firm OnePoll questioned some 10,000 European holidaymakers for the study.
The company said that Barcelona's "beautiful parks, beaches and Catalonian architecture" attracted votes from travellers, guaranteeing top spot for the city ahead of Paris and Rome.
A spokesperson for OnePoll said: "Barcelona fits the bill perfectly for so many people.
"It's ideal because it's not too far away for many Europeans, and just a short flight away for us Brits, which makes for a perfect weekend break. It's a beautiful city with super nightlife, architecture and it sees a lot of sun."
Respondents to the survey also named Venice, Madrid and London among their ten favourite holiday hotspots in Europe.
Prague was found to be the most popular short break destination for couples and also the best value for money, while Milan was voted Europe's shopping capital.
