Barcelona World Race Prepares to Launch
The mayor of Barcelona, Jordi Hereu, was at the Moll de la Fusta boardwalk recently to speak to sailors and unveil a new art installation ahead of the launch of the Barcelona World yacht race on November 11th.
Mayor Hereu unveiled a sculpture by Basque artist Martin Azua made for the occasion, which depicts a sailing boat in movement.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Barcelona will be able to see the piece of art on the waterfront alongside the race village area at the Moll de la Fusta.
Mr Hereu also met with crew members of the nine boats that will compete in the Barcelona World Race and praised them for taking part in the challenge.
Commenting on the event, the mayor said: "It is a major satisfaction for all of us and will awaken interest in Barcelonians, who will no doubt follow events closely."
The race is a two-handed, non-stop, round the world contest that is held every four years.
Mayor Hereu also paid a visit to Portal de la Pau last week, to open the Sailing Through Science exhibition, which will be free to attend for four months.
