Blessing Cats and Dogs
Those looking for something unusual from their homage to Catalonia may find Barcelona just the place to be on January 17th, which is St Anthony's Day.
A series of processions takes place in the city to celebrate the life of the saint, who was born near the city and founded the Sons of Mary monastic order.
Along with these come a series of blessings of animals, with owners bringing their cats, dogs, donkeys and other animals to places such as Eixample's Ronde Sant Pau.
While the festival will delight animal lovers, Barcelona has many attractions for visitors who take advantage of the many accommodation options in the city, including the plentiful cheap hotels.
Apart from the mild Mediterranean climate, it offers exciting nightlife, the bustling street life of Las Ramblas, a wide array of modernist architecture by Gaudi and top class football at FC Barcelona, the current champions of Europe who play in the vast Nou Camp stadium.
