Blown Away by Balloons
People staying in cheap hotels in Barcelona at the beginning of July can treat themselves to a spectacular sight at a major balloon festival.
Every year the month of July sees the Catalonian town of Igualada, in the province of Barcelona, host the launch of 40 hot air balloons from around the world.
This occasion is the biggest balloon festival in Spain and one of the largest in Europe.
Some 25,000 spectators regularly come to watch the event and marvel at the airborne palette of vibrant colours and stunning designs.
Visitors can also explore market stalls that will be set up for the festival and sample some Catalonian cuisine.
Igualada is situated on the bank of the River Anoia and provides the northern terminus of the Igualada-Martorell-Barcelona railway.
It consists of an old town incorporating the remains of a fortress and ramparts and is the central market of a fruitful agricultural and wine-producing region.
