Catalan Romanesque Art at the MNAC
The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) is currently hosting an exhibition dedicated to Catalan Romanesque art.
Masterpieces of Catalonia's Romanesque period are on display for the first time a century after they were first discovered.
The movement saw its high point in the 11th century, when a number of monumental constructions emerged in the western Mediterranean, taking their influence from the grand style of ancient Rome.
At the time, artists and sculptors were inspired by Roman sarcophaguses, honorary arches and other architectural achievements.
Catalonia was also given an artistic boost when expansion in its territory put it in contact with two of Europe's great cultural centres - Toulouse and Pisa.
