Gonzalez played an important part in the reinvention of sculpture in the 20th century through his bold compositions and highly expressive style.

The showcase that people staying in cheap hotels in Madrid can see at the Museo Reina Sofia is the largest retrospective of the artist's work ever held in Spain.

It features more than 200 of Gonzalez's works, including forged bronze and iron sculptures alongside paintings, sketches and drawings that provide a fascinating insight into his creative process.

Arranged in chronological order, the exhibition provides an artistic narrative of the Spaniard's life from his early training in Barcelona to the period of his relationship with Pablo Picasso.
