Discover the Charm and Variety of Valencia
Spain is a country as diverse as it is beautiful, with miles of golden beaches rising into sprawling cities, which in turn give way to rolling hillsides and majestic mountains. There are few locations in the country that better represent its eclecticism of atmosphere and landscape than Valencia.
The province of Valencia has an enviable location on the Spanish landscape, in the centre of the Mediterranean coastline, overlooking the Gulf of Valencia. A range of mountains form the outskirts of the province, leading to plains that stretch to the lands of Aragon and Castile-La Mancha.
As well as being an ideal holiday location in itself, Valencia is a good base for visits to a number of Spain's other hotspots. It is opposite the popular Balearic Islands and equidistant from the capital of Madrid and the Catalan city of Barcelona.
Sightseeing trips in the city of Valencia often begin in the old quarter, an area that was defended by a wall until the mid-19th century. Still standing as remnants of Valencia's past are a number of guard towers, including the Torres de Serranos and the Torres de Quart. The latter structure was built in the 15th century and still bears the scars of attacks by French artillery during the peninsular war in 1808.
Valencia is rich in history and aesthetic beauty but it also has a strong cultural and artistic side. One of the most popular locations for art lovers visiting Valencia is the Institute of Modern Art. This gallery is home to an extensive permanent collection that was established by the Generalitat Valenciana in 1984 and takes a historical approach. The compilation consists of more than 10,000 works that explore some of the fundamental themes and interests of art in the 20th century.
This year the institute will host exhibitions dedicated to artists including influential German figure Joseph Beuys and Swiss painter and sculptor Jean Tinguely.
Valencia is home to plenty of other establishments for people hoping to learn more about the city and its surroundings, including an arts and science centre and the Museum of Valencian History.
One of the facts that many people considering a visit to Valencia may already know is that it is famous for its sporting associations. One of the highlights of the city's sporting calendar this year will be the Formula One Grand Prix of Europe, which will be held on a street circuit.
The race will take place on August 24th and is set to be just as exciting as Formula One's most famous street race in Monaco. The Valencia course will incorporate a total of 25 turns and drivers will reach a top speed in excess of 201mph. This race will surely prove particularly interesting for British travellers this year as race ace Lewis Hamilton looks to secure the title that he so narrowly missed out on last year.
Football fans will also be in for some top entertainment if they pick up tickets to see the local side, who face home matches against Osasuna, Real Zaragoza and Atletico Madrid before the end of the season.
There are plenty of options for visitors to Spain to choose from beach holidays, city breaks, cultural trips, pure relaxation and more but those who want a bit of everything encapsulated in beautiful surroundings will not be disappointed by Valencia.
