Fiesta in Bilbao

Fiesta in Bilbao A mass brigade is set to descend upon Bilbao as the city celebrates its Basque heritage with a huge fiesta next month.

Lasting eight days, this is one of Spain's liveliest festivals with a variety of parades, dances, demonstrations and processions in the third week of August.

Over 100,000 people take part in the Ste Nagusia celebrations, according to Whatsonwhen, which regularly continue throughout the nights until dawn.

Events include nightly firework displays, strongman games and the invitation for a different nation to host the show each night.

Notorious parade figures include Gargantua, a fat man who eats children only to expel them through a flap in the back of his trousers, the Independent reports.

Plenty of music is also featured, in addition to daily cookery contests and food stalls.

Recommended places to view the display are the city's bridges, while most streets are likely to be lined with marquees since shops often close down for the fiesta.
