Food in the Slow Lane
Some people may think that only France could make snails into a delicacy, but in the Catalan town of Lleida the slithering invertebrates are eaten with just as much enthusiasm, as the Aplec Del Caragol shows every May.
Held for three days, this festival has been running for over 25 years and sees the town come out of it's shell to hold a big party, with plenty of dancing, music, parades, drink and, of course, snails on the menu.
Those who have yet to sample recipes that include the slow-moving salad raiders can enjoy a wide range of dishes, while enjoying traditional Catalan culture.
Held in the Camps Elisis Gardens on the bank of the river Segre, the event attracts thousands every year, proving that there must be something tasty about the creatures and perhaps giving visitors a few recipe ideas to take back home.
Lleida has plenty of accommodation for visitors, including cheap hotels.
