Get Your Running Shoes on in Barcelona
Hotels in Barcelona will be playing host to the runners and fitness fanatics of Europe in March as it hosts its annual marathon.
As well as presenting a substantial physical challenge, the Barcelona Marathon also offers an opportunity to explore the Spanish city, with a number of landmarks and attractions included in the route.
Runners set off from the bustling Placa de Espanya and make their way towards the Camp Nou stadium, home of Barcelona FC.
The route then moves into central Barcelona along the Gran Via de Catalunya, passing La Pedrera and Sagrada Familia, the distinctive buildings designed by architect Antoni Gaudi.
Participants are taken to the outskirts of the city and along the picturesque waterfront before returning to their starting point at the Placa de Espanya to complete the journey.
The Barcelona Marathon was first run in 1977 and has steadily grown in popularity, today attracting thousands of entrants every year.
