Have a Grape New Year
For those looking for a warm and fun way to see out the old year and see in the new, Seville may offer just the thing.
December 31st in the Andalusian city sees crowds gather at the Plaza Nueva by the town hall and eat a grape for each of the last 12 seconds of the year as the clock chimes midnight.
This is followed instantly by a huge party, which bursts into life in a huge explosion of flying uneaten grapes, champagne and fireworks.
Seville's New Year fiesta is just one of the reasons to visit the city at this time.
Its location in southern Spain guarantees a warm break from the bleak midwinter, while it has a number of major attractions.
These include the largest medieval cathedral in the world, which houses the tomb of Christopher Columbus, plus several museums.
Gastronomes should note it is also the place where the Tapas originated.
Seville has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
