Historic Barcelona Building Could Be Another Cultural Hub

Historic Barcelona building could be another cultural hub Visitors to Barcelona in the future could have yet another location of cultural interest to keep them occupied after the city council acquired a historic venue.

Barcelona mayor Jordi Hereu announced that the council had acquired the Sala Cibeles in the Gracia district for a sum of €7.2 million (£5.03 million).

Mr Hereu said that it will now be considered whether the historic building should be used to further boost the cultural landscape of Barcelona or for more practical purposes.

"There will now be a period of reflection to decide if the property will be used more for cultural purposes or the local needs of the district," he said.

Gracia is one of the districts, or 'barrios' that comprise Barcelona, each of which has its own character and flavour.

It used to be a separate village on the outskirts of the city and was only fully incorporated into Barcelona in 1897. It is one of the city's many popular tourist spots and a good place to find cheap hotels and accommodation.
