Festivities begin on January 19th, the day before the full celebration, when a number of concerts and parties are held in the squares of Palma's old quarter.

Then on January 20th, Saint Sebastian's Day itself, the locals celebrate the occasion by taking part in a cycle ride throughout the city.

As the celebrations move into the evening there is an overabundance of food and drink served up and a spectacular fireworks display lights up the skies above the island of Majorca.

January 20th is celebrated as the day that Sebastian was named patron saint of Palma. Many locals worship the memory of the saint for playing a part in the miraculous end of the plague that afflicted the region in the 16th century.

Palma is located on the south coast of Majorca and serves as the island's port as well as its central city. It also services as the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands.
