Journey to the Bottom of the Sea in Madrid

Journey to the bottom of the sea in Madrid Holidaymakers staying in cheap hotels in Madrid will be offered the chance to go on a strange journey this year as the city hosts an exhibition of items recovered from the wreckage of the Titanic.

More than 230 objects found among the famous vessel's remains are on display at Plaza de Colon as part of an exhibition that will be open in Madrid throughout the year.

According to the Spanish capital's tourist board, the intriguing showcase has already been seen by nearly 18 million people around the world.

Entitled Titanic: Real objects, real stories, the exhibition is being shown for the first time in Spain, giving visitors the opportunity to see some of the 5,500 items that have been recovered from the shipwreck since it was discovered.

The Titanic, which was the largest passenger steamship in the world at the time, hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean and sank on April 15th 1912, leading to the deaths of more than 1,500 people.

Its wreckage lies approximately 400 nautical miles south-east of Newfoundland, where it was discovered in 1985.
