Ketchup Carnage

Ketchup carnage Anybody who fancies really letting their hair down, provided they don't mind it turning a wet scarlet colour, can do so by heading to Spain at the end of August for the mother of all food fights.

La Tomatina, held in the small town of Bunyol near Valencia, is the ultimate battle of all against all, based around the humble tomato. Starting at 11.00 local time on (date to be confirmed), the vast assembled crowd grab as many tomatoes as they can, squish them and then throw them at whoever they like.

Reputedly started in 1945 when an argument got out of hand and turned into a food fight, this particular battle has been going on ever since.

Naturally enough, anybody staying in cheap hotels in Valencia and heading out to the village for the battle might wish to avoid wearing their best clothes, with something red perhaps being the order of the day.

The trip can be combined with a tour round historic Valencia and a bit of relaxing on the beach without being pelted with over-ripe fruit.
