Madrid on the March
Anyone heading to Madrid in October should be ready for an outbreak of national pride as October 12th is Spanish national day.
An institution dating back the best part of a century, this celebration of all things Spanish is marked by a major military parade through the streets of Madrid, which makes for a great spectacle and creates an uplifting and patriotic atmosphere.
Royal watchers will be pleased to know that King Juan Carlos will be there as well, with two veterans traditionally presenting the monarch with a bayleaf to commemorate those who have died fighting for their country.
All this takes place in one of Europe's largest and most vibrant capitals, where politics, business, food, theatre, art, sport (especially football) and outstanding nightlife all add to an intoxicating and fascinating mix.
Madrid has plenty of accommodation for visitors, including cheap hotels.
