Murcia Festivities to Wow the Crowds
September 4th 2006 will mark the start of the two weeks of festivals, frolics and fun which take place every year in Murcia.
Parades, pageants and folklore stories from the area get the destination into party mood, as local residents celebrate the city's patron Saint, La Vergen de La Fuensanta.
Bullfights, concerts, golf tournaments, competitions, video screenings, traditional games, dinners and plenty of parties are all rolled into the event, while smaller festivals and such as a pop festival, the Moors and Christians Festival, Feria Taurina and an International Mediterranean Folklore Festival all find themselves part of the celebration.
There is also a children's day with theatre and other activities to amuse youngsters, including the cooking of a giant tortilla, while exhibitions, parades and masses throughout the city will take place for the two weeks.
The saint commands festivals in other areas of Spain, with Cordoba hosting an event known locally as the caiman festival, for legend has it that she once stepped on one of these crocodiles.
