'No Better Place' Than Barcelona for Tapas Hunting

'No better place' than Barcelona for tapas hunting A correspondent for the Times newspaper has embarked on a tapas tour of Barcelona and claimed that there is no better place to experience this Spanish institution than the Catalan city.

Tapas stands alongside paella as a quintessentially Spanish form of cuisine and can be enjoyed in numerous locations in Barcelona.

Essentially a collection of appetisers and snacks that can be combined into a full meal, tapas has an interesting history.

It reportedly began when bar owners placed slices of bread over drinks to keep out flies and developed as the bread was combined with other items until the food became as important as the drink.

Tapas restaurants are now found all over Spain, particularly in popular tourist spots such as Barcelona.

Among the eateries visited by Times correspondent Paul Croughton were Sagardi in El Born, described as a "first-rate place to nibble and natter", and the bustling Cerveceria Catalana on Carrer de Mallorca.

Finally Mr Croughton dined at Santa Maria, which he described as "extraordinary", and sampled such decadent dishes as sardines with pineapple, strawberries, avocado and seaweed; duck liver with fig; and octopus roe.
