Paint the Town Red (and Yellow)

Paint the town red (and yellow) Barcelona has always been famous as a thriving hotbed of Catalan culture and language, something visitors will be able to see at its height on September 11th, when Catalan National Day is celebrated.

The date marks the occasion in 1714 when the Bourbons captured the city during the War of the Spanish Succession, breaking the siege of the city.

On this day, millions of proud Catalans will take to the streets and wave the famous red and yellow striped flag, reasserting a nationhood suppressed by the Bourbons then and in the 20th century by Franco's fascist regime, which banned both the flag and the language.

In 1980, after Catalonia gained autonomy, the regional parliament declared the date a national holiday and it is marked by the laying of flowers and wreaths as tributes to Rafael Casanova and General Josep Moragues for their fight against the Bourbons.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels will be able to enjoy the jollity of the occasion as well as the fine beaches, warm weather and superb modernist architecture of this exotic and vibrant city.
