Paleo-painting

Paleo-painting There are plenty of interesting showcaves to visit in Spain, but few can be as interesting as the Hornos de la Pena cave near the village of Tarriba in Cantabria.

Discovered in the 1900's by Hermilio Alcalde del Rio, the caves have a fascinating array of Paleolithic cave art, featuring bison, horses and a variety of other animals.

Entrance to the caves is free, with the opening times being between the hours of 09.30 local time and 15.55, up until June 30th.

The cave is one of a number that contain evidence of prehistoric life in the region.

Apart from the anthropological marvels underground, Cantabria also offers plenty above ground for visitors staying in cheap hotels in the region.

It has grand scenery with high mountains, varied wildlife including bears and wolves, plus attractive coastline, including the grand sweep of the bay around the regional capital of Santander.
