Sail Away This Summer

Sail away this summer For those looking to this summer as a chance to enjoy sun, sea and sand, but something a little more sedate than sangria, Murcia's San Pedro del Pinatar could hold the answer.

Each year the tiny, beautiful town in southern Spain is home to a nautical tradition that pays homage to the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of sailors.

The port town holds a pretty little event in which local sailors, in their freshly-pressed white uniforms, bear an image of the saint from the church to the shore, according to Whatsonwhen.

Once loaded onto a boat, the statue floats its serene way alongside a miniature armada of colourfully decorated boats to lo Pagan beach, where locals greet it and celebrate the saint.

Murcia has become a firm favourite for Britons planning their summer break or permanent escape to the sun, as it offers great weather for much of the year and a range of cheap hotels and other amenities.
