See Wagner's Tannhauser in Madrid
There will be some distinguished cultural entertainment on offer to visitors to Madrid this year when the city plays host to a production of the Wagner opera Tannhauser.
Holidaymakers staying in cheap hotels in Madrid will be able to see this show at the city's Teatro Real from March 13th until April 2nd.
The production represents a continuation of the director Jesus Lopez Cobos' dedication to works by the German composer, as he has already overseen versions of Lohengrin and Tristan und Isolde.
Two leading opera performers – Peter Seiffert and Robert Gambill – will appear in the show, along with Petra Maria Schitzer, Edith Haller and others.
Tannhauser was inspired by the true story of a German knight and poet who travelled to Rome to ask forgiveness from the pope after worshipping Venus, the Roman goddess of love.
Other productions on the Teatro Real programme this year include a version of Romeo and Juliet being staged in April and The Damnation of Faust in May.
