Spain Celebrates Religion
Holidaymakers planning a stay in a cheap hotel in Alicante in December could catch the Moors and Christians Festival, one of the province's major occasions.
The event is a mixture of religious celebration, history and street carnival.
It runs for the entire day and begins with a procession into the centre of the town to await the arrival of the Moors and Christians.
Various companies dress as the respective group to re-enact the battles that took place between them in the 13th century.
The daytime celebrations come to an end when both sets of performers retreat and commence the evening festivities with hearty meals and a drop or ten of alcohol.
Alicante is one of Spain's major tourist hotspots and is particularly popular with British travellers. It is situated on the country's famous Costa Blanca and well-known for its miles of sandy beaches.
