Spaniards Celebrate Santa Lucia
People taking a winter holiday in Seville this year may have the opportunity to see a remarkable parade of people paying their respect to Santa Lucia.
In December ever year the residents of Seville walk to the Church of Santa Catalina to see the statue of Santa Lucia that stands in front of the holy building.
The effigy is a rather gruesome one, with the right hand of Santa Lucia showing the marks of torture and the left carrying her eyeballs.
These details have not discouraged local people from showing their devotion to the saint however, as the statue's hand has worn away having received so many of the customary kisses given by visitors.
Santa Lucia, also known as Saint Lucy of Syracuse, was a young Christian martyr who is venerated by Catholic and Orthodox Christians.
As part of her story tells that her eyes were removed by her persecutors, Santa Lucia is the patron saint of blindness.
