Take Me Rome
For theatre lovers with an eye for history, the annual Merida Festival offers the most spectacular backdrop to some classical performances.
Held through July and August (exact dates to be confirmed), the event sees opera, theatre and ballet performed al fresco at the Roman Theatre, perhaps the most spectacular of the many well-preserved ruins in the city, which holds United Nations heritage status as a result.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels will be able to watch performances with a taste of what it must have been like all those centuries ago.
Other surviving examples of Roman architecture include the amphitheatre, where gladiators fought, the Puente Romano bridge, several aqueducts and a wide range of excavated ruins and current archeological sites, where visitors may even see work in progress as new treasures are unearthed.
The Roman buildings date back as far as the foundation of the city in 25 BC.
