Track Shackleton's Adventure in Barcelona
Lovers of the romance and excitement of exploration can learn the incredible story of Ernest Shackleton courtesy of Barcelona's Maritime Museum over the coming months.
The museum will host its Trapped in Ice exhibition until February 24th next year, which tells the tale of the adventurer's most famous expedition between the Weddell and Ross seas via the South Pole.
Shackleton and his men set off from London on their ship Endurance on August 1st 1914, reaching the Weddell Sea south of the Atlantic on January 10th 1915, where the explorers were trapped by pack ice.
Some 28 crew members managed to reach Elephant Island, where they were stranded, while Shackleton and five others made it to the southern coast of South Georgia. The captain returned with a Chilean navy ship to rescue the marooned men and brought them back without loss.
Photographer Frank Hurley kept an account of parts of the gruelling journey faced by the crew members of the Endurance and some of his pictures are included in the exhibition.
People staying in hotels in Barcelona will also be able to find a number of parallel activities held at the Maritime Museum, including conferences and films exploring the incredible story of the Endurance.
