Tutankhamun Comes to Barcelona

Tutankhamun comes to Barcelona Travellers staying in cheap hotels in Barcelona this summer may come into contact with an unexpected character in the city.

Until September 6th, the Drassanes Reials, the city's medieval shipyards, will host the exhibition Tutankhamun: His tomb and its treasures.

The show gives visitors the opportunity to emulate the famous archaeologist Howard Carter, the man who discovered Tutankhamun's tomb, and take a close look at the famous pharaoh's sarcophagus.

Covering some 800 square metres, the exhibition features three of the four funeral chambers that were found in the tomb as well as several of the pharaoh's treasures.

Highlights of the display include the replica quartz sarcophagus and the chapels that surround it, a collection of golden jewels and Tutankhamun's famous mask.

Tutankhamun was a pharaoh of what is now thought to be the 18th dynasty of ancient Egypt. The discovery of his tomb in 1922 led to a worldwide surge in interest in ancient Egyptian culture, turning his burial mask into an icon for the civilisation.
