Valencia Celebrates a World of Music
Fans of world culture will be in their element in Valencia this summer as it hosts an international music celebration.
The Torrevieja International Habaneras and Polyphony Competition will be held in the 'Eras de la Sal', or old salt deposits, between July 20th and 27th.
This event is intended to celebrate sailors from Torrevieja, a town in the Alicante province, who travelled to Cuba for trade and brought the melodies of Habaneras music back with them.
Torrevieja has hosted the competition since 1955 and regularly welcomes some of the best choral groups in the genre from around the world.
The town of Torrevieja is located about 30 miles south of Alicante, a tourist hotspot that is popular among holidaymakers and people staying in cheap hotels in Valencia.
Alicante is a historic Mediterranean port and boasts sights including Santa Barbara Castle.
