Valencia Hosts Fire Festival

Valencia hosts fire festival Booking cheap hotels in Valencia is a must as the city hosts its biggest festival, Las Fallas, in March.

An event for all the family, Las Fallas is a five day celebration of city fires, explosions, exhibitions, concerts and parades, running from March 15th until 19th.

The festival attracts around two million locals and tourists every year, as neighbouring towns take a turn each night to see if they can better each other.

Events are held each night in the Plaza Ayuntamiento, called the Mascleta, a display of fireworks and firecrackers.

The winning town is awarded a prize for making the loudest noise rather than the prettiest fireworks.

The finale to the week, on March 19th, is the crema, the burning of colourful effigies of anyone from Spanish politicians to bullfighters. The final night is held on the feast of Saint Joseph, in whose honour the festival was created.

Small fires are put on for children to watch at 22:00, with the main festivities beginning at midnight. The crema starts at 1:00.
