Sweden is located in Northern Europe and is bordered by Norway and Finland. The country has a population of just over 9 million. Most of Sweden’s population is based around the metropolitan areas, with large parts of the country being forest and mountain wilderness. Sweden has a long and powerful history dating back to the period of the Viking’s.

As for modern history the country since the late 19th century has seen significant changes. The population has increased as well as health and living, after having being one of Europe’s poorest countries in the early 19th century. The population doubled from 1750 to 1850 many Swedes at this time found them living in poverty, and many turning to alcohol and immigration. It is believed that as many as 1.5 million Swedes moved to America between 1850-1910 it was said that there was more Swedes living in Chicago than in Stockholm which is Sweden’s largest city.

Though with the Industrial revolution sweeping Europe people started to get back to work and move back into the cities for work. There followed a large involvement with unions as workers rights were contested. The socialist revolution that was sweeping through Europe in 1917 was avoided in Sweden with the re-introduction of Parlimentarism, and the country was democratised.

Politics in Sweden

Sweden has been a Monarchy now for almost a Millennium. The country’s power is symbolically shared between the King who at present is Carl XVI Gustaf and Parliament. Parliament originally was made up of two chambers that itself is made up from four estates.

These four estates represent Clerics, Nobility, Townsmen and Peasants this format lasted until 1866 when the Sweden became a constitutional monarchy with a bicentennial parliament. The structure then became that local government elected the first chamber, and that the second chamber was elected by a national election that would be held every 4 years.

The parliament has 349 members who hold supreme authority over the country. The acts of parliament must be made inapplicable if they are obviously against constitutional laws.

Demographics in Sweden

Sweden has one of the world’s highest life expectancies, and has transformed its reputation from a country of emigration to that of immigration. The figures show that 12% of those now living in Sweden were born outside the country. Sweden’s population also includes 17,000 indigenous people known as Samis. Also almost 50,000 of the ethnic Finns are considered a minority group. The largest group of immigrants comes from Finland, Yugoslavia and Iraq.

It was in the 1970s that many political immigrants arrived in Sweden from not only Iraq but also Iran, Palestine, Chile and other South American countries. The reason for this was that Sweden had always took such a stand against countries with military dictatorship and imperialism ones also.

Language

The Swedish language is related to the Danish and Norwegian, but differs slightly in its pronunciation.

The majority of Swedes are well spoken in English because of today’s schooling, however there has always been strong historical trade links between England and Sweden were the English language has been used to converse.
