Areas of Interest in Gothenburg

The Skanska skyscraper is known locally as Lappstiftet or Lipstick from its red and white appearance.  The building towers over the harbour and from 86 foot it offers spectacular views over the city.

Boat trips are another way of seeing the city.  Leaving from Kungsportsbron the 50 minute rides travel down canals and around the harbour.

Gothenburg’s Maritime Centre is on the harbour.  There are 19 ships and boats to explore.  There is no formal museum and so visitors can climb on board most of the exhibits and explore themsevles. 

Nordstan is the country’s biggest shopping mall.  The Ahlens department store here is worth visiting for its good value Swedish designer wares.  There is an indoor food market on Kungstorget selling everything from spices, cheeses and fruit.

The Volvo Museum displays models ranging from the 1920’s, special prototypes and items from the company’s history.  For any car enthusiast, no trip would be complete to Sweden without visiting this museum.

The Liseberg Amusement Park is Sweden’s most popular attraction.  More than three million people visit it each year.

Eating Out in Gothenburg

Feskekorka is an indoor fish market.  Smoked salmon or prawn salads can be bought here cheaply to take away and eat.  Café Husaren is also here and serves large plates of prawn and salad open sandwiches and quiches.  The cinnamon buns are so big, they can be eaten as a meal in themselves.

Smaka near the University has a charming atmosphere.  The food is traditional Swedish cuisine with typical dishes such as smoked salmon and lobster tail and meat balls with mashed potatoes.

Night Life in Gothenburg

Avenyn full of bars and restaurants comes to live on Friday and Saturday nights.  Try starting with cocktails at Lounge and then dancing later on.

Although further out of the city, the Delirium Café is an excellent alternative pub to visit.  It serves a massive selection of over 1500 different types of beer and whiskeys, no doubt with some customers have never heard of.

Neferti is a small club which plays good jazz and blues.  The atmosphere is relaxed, particularly early evening.  After midnight it becomes a nightclub with a mixed crowd and live music.  Food is also served here.

Local Information

Although much of the city can be easily explored by foot, there is also a efficient tram network.  A day pass can be purchased, and the Gothenburg Pass covers this, sightseeing by bus or boat and entry to the cities main attractions.  It can be purchased from the Central Tourist Office at Kungsportsplatsen.

From the Airport to Gothenburg

Gothenburg City Aiport is around a thirty minute bus journey to and from the Central Station.  Landvetter Airport is 25 kilometres east of the city and the buses take 20 minutes to reach the Central Station.
