Island in the Fun
The Island of Oland in Sweden offers a taste of the traditional in its harvest festival, held from September 28th to October 1st.
A whole range of festivals combine over the four days, including a fish festival, cooking competitions, square dancing and a hot air balloon rally, with pumpkins acting as signposts to the various events on the island, which lies off the south-eastern coast.
Cafes and restaurants all over the island will be open with special menus to mark the event.
One of the highlights is the Konstnatten (night of art) on the Friday night (October 29th), where, according to the festival website, "anything can happen".
Oland has plenty of accommodation for visitors, including cheap hotels.
Apart from the festival, Oland's attractions include castle of Borgholm Slott, the Iron Age village at Eketorps Fornborg and the limestone pillars of Byruns Rankar.
