Sami in the Snow
Those who love their winter festivals have a great chance to enjoy themselves up in Sweden at the Sami Winter Festival in Jokkmokk, northern Sweden, from January 30th to February 4th.
Here in the frozen north, local Sami culture has been celebrated in the festival and market since the 1600s, with visitors staying in cheap hotels having a chance to purchase local food (including reindeer meat), clothing and enjoy traditional activities.
Naturally enough, there are plenty of chances to get on the dog sleds and mush the huskies.
The Sami are a distinctive ethnic group, whose language and traditions make them, like the Eskimos and aborigines, distinct from the cultural mainstream of the country they live in.
Visitors to the area will not just be able to enjoy a cultural experience but also see the northern lights (Aurorae Borealis) in the northern sky.
