Serving Up Stockholm
Sweden is famous for many things, not least its tennis, so October 6th to the 15th could be a very good time to visit Stockholm as the nation which gave the world Bjorn Borg and Stefan Edberg hosts the Stockholm Open tennis tournament.
The ATP-run event will see Sweden's best male players – who have won the tournament in five of the last eight years – taking on top tennis stars from around the world on the indoor hard courts, with the likes of Jonas Bjorkman and Thomas Johannsen looking to make it six in nine after American James Blake won last year.
Away from the tennis, Stockholm is a large city by Scandinavian standards, with a population of 1.6 million in the metropolitan area and plenty of accommodation, including lots of cheap hotels.
The city is built across a number of islands at the mouth of Lake Malaren, featuring a number of bridges, marinas and locks, earning itself the moniker "Venice of the north".
According to the Visit Stockholm website, the water is so clean a visitor could drink it and catch salmon, even in the heart of the city.
Other attractions in the city include the historic old town, the Royal Palace with its crown jewels, the royal residence of Drottningholm Castle, The Alfred Nobel Museum with its features on the pantheon of prize winners and Storkyrkan, the medieval cathedral.
