Vad a Place to Go to

Vad a place to go to Those looking for a Christmas market in an evocative setting may have to go a long way to beat a castle, which is exactly what the Swedish town of Vadstena offers from November 24th to December 3rd.

Known as Gammeljul, the fair attracts up to 25,000 people to Vadstena Castle each year to shop and enjoy music, food and mulled wine in the spectacular setting of the castle's vast dining room.

The castle was built in the 16th century and was a royal residence until the 18th.

Vadstena is set on the banks of Lake Vattern, where visitors can go swimming in warmer months, with the smaller Lake Takern offering fishing.

There are also ice rinks, boat trips and riding tours available, while the town has many historic buildings besides the castle, including the only active monastery in Sweden, founded by the country's only saint, Birgitte.

Vadstena has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
